Vertebral Technologies, Inc. (VTI) a spinal implant developer and manufacturer announced today the InterFuse(R) Interbody Fusion System is a 2009 Medical Design and Excellence Award (MDEA) recipient.

"Vertebral Technologies is pleased that the InterFuse device is being honored with this prestigious award. VTI's engineering team designed an innovative product which provides a large and stable fusion construct," said Jeff Felt M.D., Chairman and CEO of VTI. "We are proud of our engineering team's accomplishment in developing the proprietary system which focuses on a modular design."

Orthopedic spine surgeon Paul Asdourian, M.D. of Greater Chesapeake Orthopaedics Associates in Baltimore stated, "The Interfuse device allows for a large footprint to be created through a less-invasive unilateral posterior approach, which provides spine surgeons the option of fusing a patient while potentially reducing tissue dissection and nerve root retraction." Also experienced in the InterFuse procedure is spine surgeon, Jesse Butler, M.D. from Illinois Bone and Joint Institute in Chicago. Dr. Butler said, "The intra-operative assembly of the modular device allows for a customized fit to a patient's unique anatomy."
